An example of an 'overview' style display panel
We were approached to design and produce a series of approximately 30 large format (A0) display panels for the School of Biosciences at the University of Reading. The aim of the panels was to provide information to visitors (and staff) about the breadth of work and research done within the school, as well as helping to brighten up areas of the building. The panels are to be placed in two locations in the School; in the main foyer and in the long corridor, which connects the old and new buildings.
We initially met with the team in Biosciences to discuss their requirements. They had identified the 30+ panels they would like and had begun the process of collating information and contacting staff to write for them. We proposed two different types of panel. Firstly an 'overview' panel which would have the most visual impact and contain very few words apart from a title and one or two sentences. These would be sited in the main foyer to 'grab peoples attention'. The other type of panel would be more 'detailed' – allowing for more text about a specific subject and 2 or 3 extra pictures. We provided specific word counts and specifications for image size and formats to the team in Biosciences for passing onto authors as we felt it important that the panels were not overloaded with too much text. Around the same time as we started the project the new University identity was being developed. We felt it would be a good opportunity to use the new identity on the panels, and also we did not want the School to waste their investment and have to reprint them again in 12 months time. We worked closely with James Lloyd in Typography to ensure our panel designs were in-line with the new brand.
The project is currently ongoing, with the first batch of 20 panels in place and the rest to follow this year.
