The University of Reading was to undergo a refurbishment of the café within the Science and Technology centre. The University decided to have the large floor to ceiling windows covered with a frosted glass effect. They wanted to create a design on them which would link the cafe with the rest of the centre and also fulfill the more practical requirement of restricting the view into the area. Work commenced September 2005.
The aim was to give some privacy to the café, whilst allowing glances to entice more trade. There are 20 panels in all, and we created a design to carry a theme throughout each window to add interest to those walking through the corridor.
We used words as the main focus of the design, and produced a set of variations for our client to choose from. Once a design had been chosen, we refined the design and developed it to include all 20 versions. We used words which reflected the Science and Technology Centre and its purpose, such as ‘Innovate’ ‘question’ and ‘explore’. These words were placed within a circle to be cut out of the frosted coating. This created a small area through which the café interior was visible.
