St Mary’s Church in the heart of Reading needs to raise £725,000 to restore the church to its former glory after many years of neglect. There is a fundraising committee and a project plan in place, but explanatory materials are required to distribute and support the launch of the appeal to explain why donations are required. Work commenced in February 2003.
In consultation with St Mary’s fundraising advisor, Richard Molineux, we proposed that the church needed the following: a logo stationery using the logo to ensure that all communications were consistent and focused a folder with an inside pocket to take information sheets which could be customized depending on the recipient information sheets giving background on the church, its history, and the importance of the appeal, and how to give a donation. All materials needed to reflect the history and character of the church. The building itself had to be prominent as it is a recognizable landmark by many people due to its distinctive checkered brickwork pattern. The design approach could not use any religious symbols as the church is a community building and should not to offend or alienate any members of that community.
We started by designing a logo, using the motif of an open door, bringing together the community of the church and the outside checkerboard pattern. The design of the folder uses an abstract photograph, taken by Lift, of the outside of the building to reinforce that the appeal is for the restoration of an attractive and unique building. The information sheets fit into the folder and can be customized for different potential donors. We designed a consistent layout for all the inserts, with a different photographic image at the top. We also clarified and simplified the language and tone of voice and made the donation form clear and easy for people to complete and return. We recently heard that the target is almost achieved!
