MRM.connect user interface

The brief

Gladstone MRM plc approached Lift to redesign the user interface for their MRM.connect system. MRM.connect is the web interface to MRM.plus2, a market leading leisure management system. MRM.connect gives users the ability to book activities and pay online. The new interface had to be simple to use, meet Government web accessibility guidelines, and be easy to update and customise.

The approach

We started by reviewing all the possible interface screens within the system, which helped us indentify the types of information that needed to be displayed. The initial review of the system showed us that there were five steps in booking and paying for an activity. Yet these five steps were not clear, and seemed to be more than that. We decided that the five steps needed to be prominent to the user – to show that using MRM.connect was simple. We provided Gladstone MRM with detailed screen visuals for all the different interface pages. These were revised and agreed before we started to build the XHTML & CSS templates, ensuring consistency in the user interface right from the start. We also reviewed the language used in the interface, making the terminology consistent to avoid confusion for the user.

The outcome

The new user interface has the key elements in the same place on the screen at all times. The global navigation is on the left, with options to make and review bookings, and to manage personal information. The five steps to book and pay for an activity are always present with each step highlighted, giving the user a visual cue to where they are in the process and how far there is to go. We wrote new copy for the interface, ensuring instructions used consistent language throughout. All the pages are XHTML, with CSS controlling the presentation. The site has a AA accessibility rating (some parts are AAA). We integrated our new code with the existing ASP templates, working closely with the Gladstone MRM in-house development team. We provided training on how to update the templates for future use, and we continue to work with Gladstone MRM on developing the MRM.connect user interface and customising it for clients.
